The University of Malaya (UM; Malay: Universiti Malaya) is a public research university located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is the oldest university in Malaysia and the highest ranking institution in Malaysia among several international ranking agencies. The university is distinguished by two prime ministers in Malaysia and other countries with political, business and cultural figures.
The predecessor of the university, Edward VII Medical School, was established in Singapore on September 28, 1905, when it was the territory of the British Raj. In October 1949, the merger of Edward VII Medical School and Raffles College created the university. The rapid growth of the first decade led the university to form two autonomous departments on January 15, 1959, one in Singapore and the other in Kuala Lumpur. In 1960, the Malaysian government stated that these two departments should become autonomous and independent national universities. One of the branches was located in Singapore, and later became Singapore's National University after independence in Singapore, and another branch in Kuala Lumpur, retaining the name of the University of Malaya. The legislation was passed in 1961 and the University of Malaya was established on January 1, 1962.
